A grey bardiglio marble charger

A grey bardiglio marble charger made to a silver design. Ground of pale grey with lighter markings. Bardiglio is from Carrara in Tuscany.

Genova. Circa 1750
Grey marbles are found all over Italy, but the most beautiful and the most varied are those of the Lunegiana area, which are commonly called Bardigli. They are fine to medium-grained marbles with variable traces of graphite/sulphide minerals and showing some lamination and folding.

Bardiglio or Bigio di Carrara was used extensively in churches and to make funerary wares. Many Roman statues and statues made by Greek artists in Rome in ancient times are made of this marble.
