A carved polychrome wooden bust of a man
A carved polychrome wooden bust of a clean-shaven man (probably St. John the Baptist), realistically modelled with curling hair, mounted on an octagonal gilt wooden base.
South German, mid-18th century
It is likely that this bust was originally part of a larger sculpture and that it depicts a saint, most probably St. John the Evangelist. Polychromed wooden statues on religious themes were common in Rococo Germany, in the manner of artists such as Ignaz Gunther or Philipp Jakob Straub.
