A terracotta bust of Marcus Aurelius

A late 17th century Italian terracotta bust of Marcus Aurelius, after the Antique, the hair and beard naturalistically modelled and the eyes expressive, mounted on a marble base.

Italian, late 17th century
Marcus Aurelius ruled the Roman Empire from 161 to 180 AD. He was the last of the so-called Five Good Emperors and a stoic philosopher - known for his 'Meditations'.

The contemporary perception of him as a 'philosopher-king' remained current after his death, making him a popular subject of sculpture and painting in early modern times. The source of this bust has not been identified, but bears close resemblances to several depictions of the emperor.
