Mentmore Towers, often known simply as Mentmore, was built in ‘Jacobethan’ revival style between 1852 and 1854 for Baron Mayer de Rothschild. One of the greatest country houses of the Victorian period, it contained a superb collection of art and furniture. This was dispersed in 1977, in a nine-day ‘Sale of the Century’ by Sotheby’s.
